I see posts on social media all the time with photos of beautiful bouquets and a caption that reads something like, “Buy her flowers for no reason at all, it’ll let her know you’re thinking of her”. I get that. I really do. Flowers are beautiful. But what women really want, is to know you are thinking of them. If Linda walked in the door right now with a bouquet of flowers, I would probably ask her who died. Sure, they’re great for table settings and baby showers but I don’t love dead flowers all that much. What I do love though, is when she walks in the door with a new hummingbird feeder or (most recently) 7 Christmas stockings for our 7 fur-babies (don’t judge me, Karen). See, gifts should be personalized and unique to the woman. It doesn’t take a genius to know that flowers are a cop out gift. Hell, you can buy them at the grocery store for heaven’s sake. I mean sure, when you’re dating a woman, and you aren’t sure what they’re into yet, go with flowers, or chocolates, or a card. But when you know someone and you really care for them, take the energy and the money you’d spend on those flowers, and put them to use elsewhere! If your woman loves to garden, go with live plants! If she loves to hike, maybe a new water bottle. If she’s a pet lover like me, a new leash for Fido. If you’re dead set on a bouquet of some sort, try a bouquet of fruit (because we women are all hungry all the time, whether we admit it or not). And if your woman really is into flower bouquets, go for it! Otherwise, pass up that bouquet of dead lawn clippings and get her something she will actually enjoy. That is my PSA this holiday season.
